GDC day one
I didn’t take notes, and I was also in and out of the tutorial on “Social dimensions of digital games.” This will perforce be brief.
“Games are to computers as birds are to dinosaurs.” – Julian Dibbell. Discuss.
This is the catch-all category for stuff about games and game design. It easily makes up the vast majority of the site’s content. If you are looking for something specific, I highly recommend looking into the tags used on the site instead. They can narrow down the hunt immensely.

I’m heading out to GDC later tonight. I will be there all week. This year, the luck of the draw was that I have a lot of meetings and not much talking to do. The only presentation I will be a part of will be on Monday afternoon, part of the “Social Dimensions of Digital Gaming” tutorial — some sort of game show panel thing that I am going into blind thanks to the nefarious offices of Eric Zimmerman…
Because of this, I am also unsure how many sessions I will attend, but I’ll try to blog whatever I make it to that sounds interesting! I expect I may see some of you while I am there too.
Lost Garden: Never innovate halfway an interesting post with cool data on what makes more sense: innovation, sequels, or incremental changes.
To cut straight to the chase:
Grimwell Online for a long time featured the highest level of discussion on MMOs in any forums I visited, at any rate. It was never that big, but the discussions were worth it.
Then Grimwell joined the gaming media at GamerGod. Now it looks like he’s back at his old stomping grounds, and the site seems to already be coming back to life.
Gamasutra says that the folks behind Computer Games are going to launch a new mag aimed at MMO gamers. The article claims it’s the first, but of course they forgot Massive Online Gaming, which unfortunately only ever distributed one issue. (The second issue is, however, partially available via the website).
The challenge here, if course, is making a mag that will have enough content for the devotees of any given game, whilst also catering to the folks who are game-hoppers and more fans of the medium than of any one game. I hope they pull it off.
