The people you meet on planes

There I am in the U.S. customs line at LAX, and I notice the girl in front of me, part of a smallish gaggle of young people. She’s got this long dark hair, quite noticeable. Tired looking — hey, it was an 11 hour flight from London — and she’s digging in her bag for her passport, trying to fill out the arrivals card on the fly, and keeps holding up the line. Something familiar about both her and her boyfriend, who has really startling blue eyes and keeps looking at me strangely because I keep looking at them trying to place them.

Then I realize I’m standing next to the stars of High School Musical, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, and nobody has recognized them. The two other folks traveling with them are constantly checking their Blackberry, and the conversation is something like “Yeah, when we were in Australia…” After we get through the passport stamping, I tell them quietly how much my kids love their work (didn’t want to cause a big to-do in the line), and they are very gracious despite how tired they are. I end up with the soundtrack stuck in my head the whole rest of the trip…

  1. OMG! Did you totally, like, try to become their BFF?? *squeal*!

Erm! Ahem. i mean, yes … my “kids” also love their work.

  2. Oh, I enjoy it. But my kids LOOOOOOOVE it.

And now, I really did keep it low key. There was a huge crowd there, trying to get through, why be disruptive? I didn’t even ask for an autograph or a photo.

  3. Screen shot or it didn’t happen….

I’m sorry, just seemed too perfect.

  4. Haha, yeah, my daughter loves them too. Although I’m known to watch with them.

But let’s be honest, who didn’t google when the ‘pictures’ became public? C’mon, she’s 19 🙂

  5. When I used to travel abroad, there was always someone interesting in the passenger seat.

Of course, back then, there was real first-class seating…

I remember sitting next to a man who said he was a “programmer.” I started asking him about, well, programming languages and such. I didn’t realize until later, after I glanced at his laptop, that he was involved with programming — as in television programming for a major network. He was writing a proposal for some sort of reality show in PowerPoint.

  6. Morgan… and you know that, to this day, he tells the story of some weird dude on a plane who kept babbling on about computer programming while he was trying to get some work done. 😉

    Raph,

The first time I heard “All in this Together” was my daughter’s show choir a few years ago. Now, every time I hear the original, I’m disappointed because it is not as good as the way my daughter et al did it. (They have really amazing show choirs here.)

Next time you see your new friends, tell them that they are slackers and are easily outdone by high school kids from Omaha.

  7. Soon to be posted on Vanessa Hudgens blog:

“OMG! I met Raph Koster in line at the airport!”

Did she give you shit about the NGE? 🙂

I met Raph on a plane coming back from GDC this year and I was like that with my friends after I got off the plane. 🙂
