Wii Fit

Ah, the irony of writing about Wii Fit while eating a ridiculously sugar-laden donut. Oh well.

Initial thoughts:

For a while there, I thought a balance-board-shaped Clippy was going to be my personal trainer. Someone at Microsoft must be kicking themselves, realizing that after all these years, the equivalent of Clippy is outselling their console.

It’s funny to have my Mii gain weight to match me. Then it’s not.

The balance board is significantly sturdier than any given piece of kit in Rock Band. On the one hand, the balance board is meant to be stood on by people of up to 330lbs. (Not jumped on, they insist, though the game then proceeds to ask you to jump on things.) On the other hand, you are supposed to hit drums repeatedly with great force. I suppose this is a testament to how sturdily the balance board is built…

The biggest problem with Wii Fit is that it’s a grab bag of (pretty good) activities, rather than a training regimen. You seem to have to build your own regimen, and if you don’t feel like aerobics that day, you can just blow them off. It would have been nicer if the game did a little more handholding and told you what to do.

  1. Wii Fit has you jumping? Wah?

You have seen the Iwata Asks segment on Wii Fit I assume? It was a very interesting look into the development process.

  2. To be totally honest, if you weren’t eating a donut while typing this post, it just wouldn’t have been right… 🙂

  3. I see Wii fit as a supplement or a device to remind me to do other exercise. I do daily exercise anyway, but having the BMI graph is an interesting new tool. I’ve never monitored my weight before, so this is both interesting and educational. I’m more aware of things like my diet and posture now as well, which can’t be bad.

But let’s not forget it’s a game, and it’s pretty good fun! On a couple of occasions I’ve had a few people round my house in the evening and everyone’s really enjoyed playing Wii Fit (after one or two drinks 🙂

It’s that typical Wii style of game, where a lot of the play happens off the screen between the player and audience. Interestingly it’s been girls who have been most enthusiastic about playing, and the best achievers on their first play.

At the end of the day it’s not actually going to get me Fit, but I like it and am interested to see whether I keep playing it.

  4. i agree, the board is nice and solid – for good reason, no doubt. i survived one challenge before the game asked me if i trip over my feet a lot. i quickly turned off the Wii so that the game wouldn’t see me crying. i wasn’t going to give it the satisfaction.

    My first impressions are here:
