Still good company. 😉

  1. Good company indeed. Ever been named as a “creative mastermind” before? Not too shabby.

That list is a nice reference for those of us looking to get into the industry. It’s the who’s who of the video game production world. I only knew about 10 or 15 percent of the names on that list.

  2. Raph had a beard in high school? Damn.

  3. Oi, someone find Richard Garriott a new stock photo! That thing is horrible.

  5. rofl at Number 5:

At the time, EA had been touting the arrival of Madden’s new liquid AI, to which Flock said: “Liquid AI is the crap that ran down [EA’s] leg when they saw GameDay.”

  6. Not a single woman. Still.

20 years ago, I really thought there would be at least a few women in there. Guess gaming is still a boys world.

Correction, one woman – Samantha Ryan (CEO, Monolith).

Does it count if some of the guys there have girly haircuts?

  8. Not a single woman. Still.

Heh, I was going to say the same thing, but there were a few I could swear were women, and then of course there was Samantha.

I’m absolutely sure this in no way contributes to the sorts of games that dominate video gaming. Oh no… 🙂

  9. Who?
    Who?
    Who?
    Who?
    Oh, him.
    Who?
    Who?
    Who?
    Oh, him.

  10. Ye gods and little fishies. That list is definitely not representative of the percentage of women in the industry. One person argued that it was mostly execs, but there are, as it happens, quite a few femmes in suit-land — including production and creative direction. Heck, I can name two experienced female exec producers in the MMO space, alone.

Still, we need more of them. As long as most of the execs are male and most of the designers are male and most of the developers are male, they are going to have difficulty satisfying the gaming desires of the female half of the audience.

  12. […] Scenes from GDC 2006Constance Steinkuehler and Heather Kelley playing Animal Crossing: WIld World surreptitiously in the back of the lecture hall as a panel is going on. Patrick Dugan asking a panel of academics whether the cultural shifts brought on by massively multiplayer games may include damaging our conception of the nation-state as a key form of personal identity. […] Leaving SOESo, by now people have seen the news. Yes, it is true I am leaving SOE. Why? Well, I’ve been here for gosh, almost six years maybe? It’s been a good ride, and I think we’ve gotten to do some really fun and interesting work. But I am getting interested in doing some stuff that is […] GDC day threeI missed every session except Phil Harrison’s keynote, because of meetings or just stopping in the hallway to chat. And that keynote has been reported all over the web, so I won’t go into detail, except to say that I wish I had my PSP with me so I could download Loco Roco onto it […] Study: Games Are HealthyKristen spotted this, since I have no time to read websites while I’m here at GDC. But the Games for Health initiative has some cool stuff they are talking about here at GDC this year… Study: Games are Healthy PopCap Games and The Games for Health Project have released a new study in an effort to show […] GDC Day Two: Jesper Juul and sandbox playSo, I wasn’t actually at this session, so I missed what Jesper actually said… but I have a bone to pick with him, based on what GameSpot reported he said. Juul first presented a common explanation of why goals make sense in games, based on the writings of designers like Firaxis’ Sid Meier and Sony Online […] GDC 2006 Day One: Designers Meet Social ScientistsI meant to post these in order, but oh well. Designers Meet Social Scientists part of “The Social Dimensions of Digital Gaming” tutorial day moderated by Eric Zimmerman There were three designers on the panel: myself, Heather Kelley of Ubisoft, and Matt Adams of Blast Theory; and three social scientists: Suzanne de Castell of Simon Fraser University in Canada, […] The Hot 100From Ten Wackiest to one of the Hot 100. Still good company. GDC Day Two: putting the fun in functionalThese are my notes on this session from the Mobile GDC. It’s got significant overlap with the previous posting on this topic, but there’s a lot of new material too. Amy Jo Kim and Scott Kim Putting the Fun in Functional Uses Zimmerman/Salen’s definition of game, but an informal definition is “a structured experience with rules and goals […] GDC 2006 WikiHopefully, this GDC 2006 Wiki will become the place to go to get summaries of sessions.
