A bit of Areae news

I should make a category for Areae-specific stuff! Not that I want it to take over the blog, of course. I didn’t bother linking to every bit of coverage from the announcement because there was so much of it. But this interview with the Guardian ended up being much about overall topic than about specifically the company and the project. Longtime blog readers will probably see some stuff that echoes things I have said before…

  1. This article resonates so much with things I’ve been wanting to see on the web for a while. Starting with MMO’s the late GNE (game neverending) and the growing idea of incorporating play into web applications I can see how there is going to be this kinda fusion of web apps + gaming + social software. Looks like Areae has it’s finger on the right pulse! I wonder if Raph knows of m3mnoch and his game “the singular“.

  3. heh. yep. i’m pretty sure he knows about it. i’m loud and obnoxious enough….

the best part about that interview, raph? this quote from you:

It’s all too easy to get caught up in the coolness of what you are making without pausing to consider whether anyone else actually wants it. This means that often small incremental innovations are the best way to go. But the danger there is also that if you only ever pile small stuff on top of more small stuff, you end up with these fractally complicated sorts of apps, like Microsoft Word. Sometimes you have to go back, wipe the slate clean, and question fundamental assumptions.

    amen, my friend.

case in point? who here has seen my NEW secret project: digg.com + darkthrone.com = hypefighter?

    How Does it Work?
The basic gameplay is easy. You have a limited amount of turns at your disposal. Read stories and click the “recruit” link to add a recruit to your army. Knights are recruited from video game reviews. Conscripts from video game commentaries. Scouts from previews.

stil an early poc/alpha thing, but sticky, accessible and fun none the less. in fact, i was in the middle of putting together some atom feeds for it when i saw andrew’s trackback from here.

ooh. and as an aside, don’t forget justin hall and duncan gough with their passively multiplayer stuff. justin’s upcoming gdc talk should be fun.

    m3mnoch.

  4. eh? i wasn’t aware of any attention. hmmm…. someone should really tell me these things.

uh, thanks for the congrats tho!

    m3mnoch.
