Hugo Award Winners
Tor.com has the list of this year’s winners, including
- Best novel to Michael Chabon for The Yiddish Policemen’s Union: A Novel
- Best film goes to Stardust
- Best short form dramatic goes to a Doctor Who episode, “Blink”
- Ted Chiang’s novella The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate
Oh, and that Scalzi guy won something too. 😉

Stardust, really? That makes me dubious of the other Hugo winners.
The other nominees were the first season of Heroes, the latest Potter movie, Enchanted, and the Golden Compass movie. I would have given the nod to Heroes, myself, but Stardust would certainly be in my second slot.
And don’t forget, people LOVE Neil Gaiman’s stuff. I am guessing many might have voted for it out of affection for the book.
For the best novel nominees that would have been my fifth choice. I just found it totally unreadable. Last Colony would have been my first choice, then Brasyl, then Halting State. I didn’t read the other one, but I’d have voted for it ahead of the one that won because I can’t imagine I’d have liked it less.
Wow, that’s a pretty weak set of nominees for the movie category. I realize there isn’t a lot to choose from but it really makes the movie category seem superfluous when you have to nominate a movie like the Golden Compass (with its whopping 41% Rotten Tomatoes / 51% Metacritic).
I like the Hugos because they highlight sci-fi/fantasy literature. Their movie nominees seem incredibly fluffy by comparison. I can’t think of a year when five quality sci-fi/fantasy movies were released. Why bother?

That GAWD “Blink” won…that episode still scares the bajeezus out of me.
