MMOs are dead! – Another Here

  1. Raph’s Website :Raph’s Website » PC Gaming isn’t dead, it’s just MMO now

  2. I don’t get it… Does “store discounting” of physical products have anything to do with the subscriber base or with the actual popularity of the MMO itself anymore?

With the shift more and more towards online distribution of the primary game files and executables, if anything, this says that the physical distribution of CDs may be in danger.

  3. Wow! FFXI is on the list! Thats great! :D!

That was a good one, but it didnt have lasting mass market appeal, I just canceled my account this month, I’ve had it since launch.

  4. I am glad to not only see PC gaming is not dead, but that WoW is not at the top of the list! (at the moment)

Well, I know that PotBS is at the top because it is new, but I have taken the plunge and I must say that it is a great diversion. I very much recommend it to anyone who wants a game with economic depth, without sacrificing being able to actually walk around as your avatar.

The quests are well written and the art style is pleasing (everything has a surprising amount of polish for a non Blizzard MMO). It is nice to see a game with traditional leveling and class elements that can also incorporate game mechanics that one would see in a more Koster-like game.

  5. I am looking forwards to the MSO, or the Massively Single Player game called Spore.

  6. I’m wondering about cause and effect here.
Are MMOs selling for PCs because:
    a) They seem like a good value for the money (It’s hard for an 8 hour game to be worth $50.)
    b) They are designed for the PC (instead of a port of a port)
    c) People that network with friends are more likely PC people, and thus encourage freinds to play MMOs with them.
    d) other things I’m not thinking of right now. 🙂

It made 2 of the top 8, meaning the total sales of the battle chest + the actual game might be more than any of the others alone. So I wouldn’t be so quick to say that it isn’t at the top.

  8. WoW’s probably been dethroned because the bot/farmers are getting programmed out of relevance 🙂

PC’s really only have traditional MMOs left as the exclusive genre. Heck, even D/L casual games are going XBLA nowadays (though they’re still huge on PCs, just not at anywhere near comparable numbers). If MMOs start dropping the poorly-designed complex UIs in favor of a more traditional console experience, the writing there will be on the wall.

Money follows where the money goes. That won’t be PC gaming itself will be dead. It’ll just mean it becomes even more the perview of indies and experimentation. Which I consider actually a good thing. I ignored most of the derivative/schlock PC stuff that was around during the golden age in much the same way I ignore most of the derivative/schlock stuff around for the consoles now enjoying *their* golden age.

It’s also a little johnny-come-lately to say “PC gaming is ‘dead'” now. “Dead” is in quotes because most people are just saying that PC gaming is the not the be-all/end-all anymore, and they miss the days when it was. Or something.

  9. Just a week after, the bestseller rating has changed a lot. I think this may be short-term (daily? weekly?) averages only.

Call for Duty 4, LotRO, FF are gone, but Sims 2 Free Time and Rail Simulator are in.

Both Sims 2 Free Time and Rail Simulator have front page ads.

Basically I’d call bogus on the the gamespot bestseller servelet being very meaningful data longterm, i.e. there being a good conclusion that MMOs dominate the PC market based on a snapshot of this.
