The Sunday Song: Polliwog Sans Warts

May 11th, 2008

Maybe someday the Polliwog will grow up to be a frog prince, but for now it’s still mostly a jam. This version is, I think, less of a trainwreck than the last one. :) The piano’s gone, but it’s all still at 200bpm!

That’s better. On the other hand, shoot the bass player before the drummer does it for you. :-)

Working on a salsa piece here. It will be a salsa rhythm but a Steely Dan progression. We are what we eat or who. While I was in PR, I saw a trio that consists of the usual percussion gaggle and three guitarists. Two are playing identical lines on quatros (gotta get one of those) and the other is playing all rhythm and bass on a nylon string finger-style. The quatro players are note-for-note identical on these lines that are longer than I could possibly remember. Incredibly complex stuff. You should get some of their CDs.

Heh, I am the bass player and the drummer is a loop library. :)

Don’t turn your back on it. Mechanical drummers have deadly rimshots.

One of the best recordings I made is one of the worst for production value. I used a $200 4 track cassette, a crappy guitar controller and cheap synth for bass and keyboards, but a fine vintage SR-16 drum machine with the fill button. I stuck the mic outside in a rainstorm, then sang the vocal without writing down any lyrics. No planning. The reason it worked was it forced me to be very simple. As the number of toys increased, the time and opportunities to screw up did too.

I sorta miss the band, the rhythm section and the big reels of 1/2 inch. But not that smell. ;-)
