Areae’s hiring more…

April 18th, 2007

Specifically, we want a community manager. You may feel free to speculate on what that means regarding announcements! About the only thing that I would add to the below is to point out that as far as we’re concerned, the community job is one of the most important at the company. It’s our public face to our most important people, actual users. So this is a really important job, if you’re interested; we’re determined to treat community as a core competency. Details on the job:

Areae is on a mission to revolutionize virtual worlds and MMOs. We’re a venture-backed company in beautiful San Diego, and our investors share our passion and vision for the future of online gaming. Our core team includes veteran MMO developers with deep experience from online leaders like EA, Sony Online, and NC Soft, and we have developed and launched some of the world’s most successful online games to date including Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies and EQ2. We are currently looking for a Senior Online Community Manager to join our team and help develop the next generation of online gaming.

The Senior Online Community Manager will have proven experience in building, growing and nurturing a strong, positive community. Responsibilities will include:

- Be the main point of presence for multiple communities including both players and content creators.
- Develop information roll-out plans to foster community growth through the regular release of product features.
- Build positive relationships with key community leaders and product advocates.
- Help provide development direction by being the voice of the player community.

Requirements
- 3+ years of experience managing large online communities
- Previous experience launching and building new online communities
- Professional written and verbal communication skills
- Experience managing remote contractors participating in community or content development
- Game design experience desirable
- Content development experience desirable
- Project management experience desirable

Areae is an early-stage company and the candidate must thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and be willing to take on a variety of responsibilities.

If you’re interested in revolutionizing online gaming, we want to hear from you. Please send an email with your cover letter and resume to jobs@areae.net. We offer a competitive benefits package, including stock options.

With this thought in mind and while visiting Raph Koster’s website today, I was reminded of a profession that might just possibly be the next stepping stone that I’m looking for. Raph mentioned that his game company is looking to hire more people and one of those people is a senior community manager. Now while I don’t think I can apply for their position, primarily because it looks like you need to work in San Diego (although I’m still not 100% sure), it still seems like I’m seeing a lot of

I hear Thunderfart just quit Galaxies…

The link on the Areae jobs index is incorrect. Page ID for “Senior Community Manager” should be 48.

    Good catch, Morgan! Fixed.

    Is telecommuting an option ?

I’m going to have need to hire someone similar in about six months, though I probably won’t be such a stickler for the experience bar.

If I wasnt otherwise preoccupied, the opprotunity to heckle you on a daily basis on behalf of the playerbase would be to much to resist and I might apply (not that I stand a chance in hell of getting an interview).

However I’m sure it would preclude trolling the bosses blog and likely require use of a spell checker regularly, so the cons outweigh the pro’s, unless of course your throwing in free beer and options and the office is near the beach…..oh man my priorities are all screwed up. :)

… oh man, my priorities are all screwed up.

    They’re not, actually. ;)

    1. “Free beer” becomes easy access to beer. There are a number of restaurants within walking distance of the Areae office, as well as convenience stores. The office is within walking distance of various residential areas. There are also around ten country clubs and golf resorts within a 20-mile radius, too.

    2. “Options” becomes good benefits and stock options. See the bottom of the ad.

    3. Pacific Ocean is located 15 miles from the office. Lake Hodges is just a few miles away.

    Truth in advertising then:

‘Lake Hodges’ is full of dieing trees, looks horrible, and the fishing stinks.

Traffic on the I15 is a horror until the construction gets finished, a couple more years probably.

Anyways, good luck with the posting and Welcome to Paradise to whomever gets the gig.

I am so tempted to apply, but alas, moving across the country right now isn’t something I could really do, for family and financial reasons. And yes, I think I’m qualified for the job and could do it well. ;)

I hope whoever you end up hiring works out well and I can’t wait to hear more about what you guys are up to!

That’s only the part of the lake near I-15. If you take Del Dios Highway, the western part of Lake Hodges looks great.

As for fishing, well, the second-largest bass caught in the United States, weighing 20 lbs., resided in Lake Hodges until 1985. An ancient fault line splits the lake into western and eastern regions, and there’s supposedly a lake monster named Hodgee, too.
