June 20th, 2008

Tomy’s new piggy bank rewards savings with in-built RPG – Boing Boing Gadgets

Technically, i think this qualifies as a serious game, does it not?

Hmm you know what would be cool? Set up a piggy bank that could count how much money was in it and send that info to a game. Basically, set up an RMT game where the money put in the bank gives you in-game money. You encourage savings, and it’s just about unbeatable beyond hacking the bank to give false numbers.

This is kind of inline with games that give you points based on how much you jog or test your blood sugar (Glucoboy).

Er by “game” I mean some kind of online RPG/MMO type world/game/server/thing.

    I like. Make it so.

This. Is. Incredible. What a fantastic idea! And like Tim said, it could go so much further. Imagine a system like Habbo that interfaces with the balance of a real-world bank account and monitors savings levels and deposit habits to give kids in-game rewards. Read my post on this proposal.

David, a business model might be to create a game that you turn around and license to banks and credit unions. Getting access to that data (balances) could be pretty tricky. I could see the financial institutions doing a “push” of the data to the game, with all identifying material like bank account number and name not being shown – only game account number. Let them hold the info that maps real data to game data.
