Go visit LegendMUD

Visit the LegendMUD website I added a button to the sidebar on the right so that all of you Johnny-and-Jane-come-latelies can go see what I am referencing constantly, and get a taste of why I say that MUDs are basically the same as MMORPGs, and have a look at old-school text gaming. Let me know what you think. 🙂

For those who don’t know, the theme of LegendMUD is “history the way they thought it was at the time.” It would probably be impossible to do Legend in graphis, because the art investment would be far too high: the game has everything from Celtic Ireland and the sidhe, to World War I and biplanes, all conveniently reached via time travel. If the inhabitants of a region depicted believed in dragons, well, then, there will be dragons. If they instead were more into baseball, well, then you’ll find a functioning baseball game.

For the old UO vets, a piece of trivia is that three designers and one programmer on UO came from LegendMUD; Damion Schubert of M59 and Shadowbane is credited on Legend as well, as “Heretic.” See if you can spot the individual bits of Legend design that have made it from game to game and pop up today in new guises… off the top of my head, moods and badges stick out.

  2. Text gaming is old school? Who knew 😛

  3. I’m glad you auto-forwarded the /raph section to here. For the longest time, after you were promoted to VP at SOE, I thought you had simply stopped writing; the last entry was sometime in 2003. Only recently did I google you and find this page.

I did, however, buy your book when it came out. Haven’t read it, but I have it.

And yes, this is the same Igni from the SWG beta boards. I’m glad to see you’re prospering and well.

  4. You’ve got a lot of catching up to do! I actually had been blogging in the interim on the Theory of Fun book website. All those posts are merged into here now though.

Basically, there was a Sept 03 to Oct 04 gap. But since Oct 04, there’s actually a fair amount there.

  5. After feeling jaded with all the available MMORPG’s out there I started to play one of Iron Realms Text based games Imperian. This was the first time I had played a mud since I was at university and got totally hooked again. It’s amazing what your mind can bring to the table in a well designed text game. I haven’t had the pleasure of playing LegendMUD but will give it a try some time.

  6. Oh, and happy New Year all 🙂
