Cartoon Network’s turn

It’s been an ill-kept secret, but now it’s official that Cartoon Network will have an MMO.

Yet another in the march of the major media licenses. Interestingly, this one looks to be following the free play model, with microtransactions. It will be interesting to see how kids + microtransactions mixes in the Western market.

I’d say at least 50% of a cartoon character’s charm is their look, but the other 50% is their voice acting. Are they going to have the proper voice for all these characters, for all their dialogue in-game? My guess, probably not, and then something is lost. I’d probably enjoy playing in a Venture Brothers themed area, but if I don’t hear Patrick Warburton’s voice coming out of Brock Sampson, it just ain’t the same.

Kids (you must claim to be 13+ to play) + Micropayments work out pretty well on Puzzle Pirates, although it is occasionally terrifying and we have had to put in some stringent fraud controls. I encouraged Cartoon Cartoon to use this model, but they sound like they’re still planning some kind of subscription, too. Not necessarily hard models to mix. I think with kids there’s a big argument (700k Runescape accounts) to go with $5/m subscription.

Could not agree more. For a couple of reasons: the second of which is that quite a few fantastic feature animations I’ve seen have been ruined by terrible voice acting (usually translations).

I’m more interested in the “East meets West” that they mention in the press release, but I don’t think it has to even be based on existing CN properties, it could go the route of City of Heroes and just be a “Build your own toon” type game in cartoon themed worlds. Of course it would be great to get missions from the cast of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, but the game does not need the licensed properties to be fun.
