The GDC Vault has posted the full video of “It’s All Games Now!”, my talk from GDC Online. And it’s one of the free ones!

I have a brief precis of it here, if you don’t know what it is about. But hey, it’s only an hour of your life, right? So go check it out even if you don’t know what it is about.

  1. Mr. Koster,

I just watched your GDC Online talk and while I secretly wish we could wave a magic wand and go back to the days of UO and SWG, I realize that is never going to happen and the current streamlined/cookie-cutter design of MMORPG’s will continue to thrive while indies and niche markets possibly disappear altogether….

However, as I thought about your observations in this talk (as well as Casual Connect Seattle 2011), I realized how fortunate we all are to have a person like you keeping an observant eye on the waters surrounding us, noting any dangers and opportunities that float past…..

I sincerely thank you for everything you have done over your career, especially your more recent work. I used to be quite bitter than a talent like you was being “squandered” on social games/facebook, but as I’ve learned more from your talks and have thought about things, I understand now that it is a blessing WIZARDS like you are present in the strange new world of social gaming/facebook.

It’s sad to me when you say “we are wizards” and your (largely) mainstream audience is sometimes bewildered in their response. However, I also notice that by giving your talks to these up-and-comers, you are teaching the future generations of devs a more important lesson than making “fun/balanced/profitable” games… You are teaching game devs about the vital importance of them coding in some sense of social responsibility into their gaming (and you are also helping many of us question where this “game” mindset is leading us).

Anyway, I am sorry for rambling and for the TL;DR nature of this comment. I’m not a dev or even old enough to really remember the high days of MUDs and whatnot. However, I do realize you were one of the major players back then, and you still are now (now, as with then, it is clear you are one of the gatekeepers and observers who have made a huge different over the preceding decades (and stand to continue making a difference in gaming well into the future).

My best wishes and gratitude to you and your work. I wish you all the success in the world. Thanks again 🙂

  3. Well done, Raph.

I’m at a loss for comments. Your ending doesn’t seem to really address what I took from this. Unless you’re calling for the “wizards” to reshape the social media of the real world through games, to break the spell…so to speak.

  4. […] check out Raph Koster’s presentation from a conference (GDC) earlier this year titled, “It’s all games now.” Some of it is above my head, but it’s fascinating and offers lots of food for thought […]
