Another Perfect World doc online

June 24th, 2009

Remember I mentioned that documentary I was in called Another Perfect World? Well, it aired on Channel 4 in the UK yesterday. If you aren’t region-locked away like everyone in the US, you can watch it online here: Another Perfect World – 4oD – Channel 4.

Someday I hope I get to see it. :)

Ha! Finally, an actual advantage to living in the UK!

I watched this documentary just now. It’s 71 minutes long, and they’ve made a pretty good job of describing the basic issues of law and governance of virtual worlds. There’s a small digression about Korean game stars, but otherwise it stays pretty well on track. They treat the subject matter with respect, and all of the speaking heads (Philip Rosedale, Peter Ludlow, Hilmar Petursson, Jake Song, you) come out of it looking like sages rather than crackpots.

Metaplace gets a nice several-minutes section, and there are maybe half a dozen other cuts to you saying things. Metaplace is presented as if it were The Future, which hopefully it is.

The only real complaint I have about it is the pronunciation of “Lineage” as “Line-age” rather than “Linny-age”. I think they may have said “War of Warcraft” at one point, too…

Certainly worth watching, though it would have been nice to have a narrator that knew the subject matter a bit better (notable gaffes: War of Warcraft, and the fact that she pronounced Lineage wrong all the way through). Being an EVE fanboi I was disappointed they didn’t look at the actual in-game politics a bit more instead of concentrating on the PR stunt that is the CSM.

As Sensei Richard says, the show was great! Surprisingly so for our terrestrial TV — though, having said that, documentaries on the ’supplementary’ digital channels are usually ridiculous.

If you want a digital copy, I can probably rummage something up…

I finally managed to find a copy on YouTube. Hopefully it won’t get pulled down. I’ve stuck up a quick article about it if anyone wants to watch it:

@Richard Bartle Yeah, I was confused by the Lineage pronunciation too. Is it meant to be pronounced as “Line-age”??

Great interview with you, Raph. Really enjoyed it.

Thanks We Fly Spitfires, I’ve been wanting to see this since Raph first posted about it in May! Once again Australia is shafted by region locks as well :(

…and just as I go to watch it its been removed, dang.

  7. We Fly Spitfires said on

Argh, how annoying. I’m not surprised though – I figured YouTube would remove it. Oh well, at least we got a few days out of it and some people got to see it. I really hate this region locking stuff…

Aw, dang. (In my best Mater impression.) I was going to watch it today. Blargh.
