Julian Dibbell’s My Tiny Life remains, to this day, the best book written about what it is like to live immersed in a virtual world. The fact that the world in question in text-based, and the events described happened over a decade ago, is completely irrelevant. You cannot call yourself knowledgeable about virtual worlds unless you have read this book.

Unfortunately, it’s been out of print for years. I am lucky — I have two copies, one a galley proof and one a real copy, first edition and everything. They get checke dout of our little office lending library and read by Areae employees. But for most people, it’s just hard to find.

Until now, because Julian has made it available via Lulu for a very reasonable price in printed form, and as a free PDF for download. Go get it. Read it. Enjoy.

  1. Great~! Ive had a hard time finding this, time to put it on my PSP!

  2. I picked up a pristine copy of “My Tiny Life” at the used book just a couple of weeks back. It hasn’t bubbled up to the top of my “to read” pile yet, but I might just have to bump it up now.

  3. I read “My Tiny Life” in college after our English class readA Rape in Cyberspace. It was a great book, but somehow I found his experiences in LambdaMOO much more compelling then my own.

  4. I actually picked this up the other day when I saw it advertised on Terra Nova. I think I’m up the fourth chapter or so right now; It’s a great read.

  5. Nice! I very distinctly remember reading the Village Voice piece this started from, but never got the book. My memory is not too good, so anything that stuck with me for 15 years is very good stuff.

  6. I just ordered the paperback. I don’t remember where I read “A Rape in Cyberspace” before, although it was probably a link in a series on the New Games Journalism not too long ago. I figure I sit in front of the computer too much as it is, so to read the entire book, I’ll wait for it to ship to me.
