Oh and scratch the Maplestory reference. I keep forgetting it’s not done by JUST Wizet, but rather, in partnership with Nexon and that this deal with between MTV and Nexon.

And I agree on the outsiders-bringing-the-success. I don’t think this is a harbringer though, more like Codemaster increasing their library through imports. MTV doing this broadens their portfolio beyond Laguna Beach et al, and porting is much lower risk.

A more pure example of an outsider my actually be Blizzard, though they were at least already in the gaming space. Maybe Postopia (Post Cereal) or Millsburry (General Mills).

But then we have to ask what “co-opting” really implies. Does Kart Rider have a chance of usurping WoW by taking players away from WoW? Or is it more a matter of Kart Rider (or any other future import/new model) gaining simply more attention than WoW through growth from a different audience altogether (ala Neopets or Maplestory)?

I’ve been thinking it’ll be the latter case of someone new coming in and attracting someone new. The current flat-fee playerbase in NA and EU is pretty big, and could get bigger. But there’s a lot more of the next generation of gamers than those in the core 18-40 MMOG demo.
