My monitor died

Very annoying, but hence the lack of postings today. First I had to try different cables, then different computers, then mix ‘n’ match, to confirm that it was indeed the monitor. Whenever it turns on, it shows a picture for about one second, then it goes to a black screen.

Guess I will need to run out and buy a new one first thing in the morning… *grumble*

  1. I’m quite happy with the ViewSonic Graphics Series G90f CRT monitor. I’ve never met an LCD that I actually liked. What about you?

  2. It was a Viewsonic VX910 LCD. LCDs have turned out OK, once I went for 16ms response time for the sake of games.

  3. Sorry, Raph, can’t resist:

    Was it a Sony?

  5. Ick. That’s no good. Broken monitors are no fun. Well, it’s always an excuse to get a better one…?

  6. Get a good 20 or 21″ LCD! .. The prices has gone down alot the last year, so it won’t be too expensive either. 🙂

I love my 17″ Nec 1760NX .. Still going strong!

  7. I’ve been eyeing a 19″ or 21″ widescreen LCD. Saw a real nice one from Dell. I’m holding off until I can finish my list of titles that’ll work at that widescreen resolution in native though. I hate rectangles when the game (or TV program) is meaning to send a square almost as much as I dislike the vertical pillars that show up when trying to use 4:3 aspect on a 16:9/10 screen 🙂

  8. I got a Samsung 19″. Not widescreen tho. 🙂

  9. I don’t really understand the pull of widescreens for monitors. B has a I suppose if one was watching movies on it, then okay… but for games they are only eh. B has a 23″ widescreen for his Mac. Everybody ooh’s and ahh’s when they see it. And it works great when I’m doing Quicken and can have a zillion windows open and see them all, but playing NWN, there are two big black bars down the sides anyway.

  10. I spend more time on my monitor in email, word processing and browsing than I do on games, so the extra real estate would have been nice. They had a widescreen 21″ that also rotated to portrait mode and I was tempted — but it was twice the price.

  11. Yea, can’t remember the booth that use that monitor, but man did it look nice.

Most of the time I spend at my computer is for gaming and writing. To answer Janey’s question:

I like the widescreens because I like the cinematic feel. It seems to be where everything is headed too as the various interested industries look to converge into a more efficiently cross-medium presentation.

Only problem I have now (since the games I’d want in widescreen all have native support) is the computer being a bottleneck. Oh the decisions! 🙂

  12. For widescreen monitors… It matches how the human eye views things better, essentially. Basically, you see more horizontally than vertically, so you would technically be able to fill your view up better with a widescreen monitor. Or something like that. 🙂

That and just having the extra space is nice. Although, I dual monitor for those reasons. Of course, I’m still running CRTs regretfully…

Of course, there are some games out there that do not support widescreen monitors, but that’ll be less and less common as time goes on.

  13. In my experience, affordable LCD monitors are built with numerous flaws that make LCD monitors simply inappropriate for e-mail, word processing, and anything else that necessitates color and shape accuracy. The edges and corners of an LCD display often warp and distort the image; although, the image can be understood, this effect is unbearable for text. LCD monitors are known to display inaccurate color and shapes, so this makes LCD monitors not useful for, say, graphic design where color and shapes must be accurately transferred to a printed medium. (Most people with untrained eyes couldn’t tell the difference in most cases though…) In addition, a high-quality CRT is far more affordable than a low-end LCD, especially for what you get. Sure, a CRT consumes more physical space and uses more power, but as long as we’re going along with the “bigger is better” attitude, the CRT monitor is the best option in most scenarios.

Personally, I’d rather use this flat panel monitor. Unfortunately, when the monitor was available, the $8,999 price tag left me in the dust. But you have to love that resolution!

  14. Now that’s a nice resolution! … Shame the refresh rate is so horrid when you’re getting up there. Well, that and the price.

  15. I think you’ve jinxed me; my monitor broke today. 😛

We actually think it’s a short in the cord… so if they send me a new one, I guess no harm no foul. But if they won’t… Dude, I’m getting a Dell! (The box I’m on now is the same one I used to play UO in 1998. The guts are mostly different, but it’s the same box. It’s past time for a new rig.)

  16. Sooo anyway … I bought a new monitor. It’s a 20″ Wide Screen. Should be here Monday. (The new Dell is already here.)

  17. […] Well, the widescreen monitor I got a while back when my old monitor died is being phased out. This meant that Amazon had a few sitting in a warehouse that they were getting rid of. So now I am running dual widescreen ViewSonic VX2025wm monitors. […]
