A pain in the neck

February 9th, 2006

I mean that literally. I woke up yesterday with a stiff neck (though some might claim that’s my natural condition!) and it gradually wore away during the day after a hot shower and moving gingerly for a day. But this morning, I awoke in this San Jose hotel room at 5am barely able to move my head.

As usual, a quick glance at medical resources on the web moves past “you slept funny” directly to “cervical myelopathy.” I should have learned by now not to read medical stuff on the web, it just makes you sure you’re going to die at a young age.

Of course, the little bottle of Advil I usually travel with is in my larger roller bag; I brought only the small roller backpack since this was just a quick overnight trip…

I’ll take $5 on “You slept funny”. Try to find some Ibuprofen, Raph.

    And sleep well tonight.

LOL – oh yeah, the internet self-diagnoses are deadly!

I have had a headache, stiffnes and an odd red spot on my neck. The result? LYME DISEASE. (or not) ;)

    Feel better!

I had the same thing two weeks ago – mine felt like a pinched nerve or something. I ended up taking a muscle relaxer prescribed by a RN and some prescription strength Aleve. I also was prescribed a major narcotic, but I didn’t take those.

Hope you get to feeling better.

This has happened to me periodically, since I was about 10. It happens most often if I A.) sleep with too many pillows, B.) sleep with no pillow or a very thin pillow, C.) sleep in a drafty room, or D.) sleep in an unfamiliar bed.

Sleeping in a bed that wasn’t your own probably exascerbated your problem quite a bit. I wish I had some good recommendations, but sadly, I’ve never found a good remedy for this one, aside from time. Make sure your room is warm enough when you go to bed, and that your pillow configuration is as close as possible to what you use at home.
